SUMI NO IE · 炭の家

A 100-Year Farmhouse on the River.

Restored, not renovated. Sumi no Ie keeps what matters — the structure, the materials, the feeling of age — and quietly removes what doesn't.

THE HOUSE

Built to Last Another Hundred Years.

Sumi no Ie was built in the early 1900s in traditional Tosa farmhouse style — heavy timber frame, earthen walls, a wide veranda facing the Niyodogawa river. It sat empty for years before Sumizumi took it on.

The restoration took most of a year. The original frame was retained entirely. Materials used in repairs — plaster, charcoal, timber — all came from within the town. The result is a house that feels unchanged but lives like somewhere carefully considered.

ACTIVITIES

There's Enough to Do. And Enough Not To.

01

BBQ

Riverbank grilling with our own charcoal. We provide the equipment and charcoal; you bring what you want to cook.

02

Charcoal-making

A half-day session at the kiln with one of our team. See the full process from wood to finished charcoal.

03

Cooking over Charcoal

Cook a meal over our own charcoal — irori-style or on the riverbank. We supply everything.

04

Seasonal Farm Work

Join whatever is happening on the land — rice planting, persimmon harvest, or forest work. Depends on the season.

05

Forest Walks

Self-guided or with a local guide. The cooperative forest is a 20-minute walk from the house.

06

River Play

The Niyodogawa runs clean enough to drink. Swimming, wading, or just sitting by it — all good options.
