SUMIZUMI LLC
すみずみ合同会社 is a rural business in Niyodogawa Town, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. We build from what the forest and community already have — and try not to waste any of it.
WHAT WE DO
Premium oak charcoal from sustainably managed forests. B2C, wholesale, and export.
Hands-on rural life — charcoal-making, river and forest, soap and coffee workshops. Antiques and curated objects.
Sumi no Ie — a restored 100-year farmhouse on the Niyodogawa river. Activities, slow time, Airbnb bookings.
Problems Corner for elderly residents. Regional revitalization. Four-track internships. Disaster response partnerships.
MISSION
Niyodogawa is one of Japan's least-populated towns. The river is among the clearest in the country. The forests have been managed for centuries. We started Sumizumi to make things worthy of that place — and to find ways for more people to experience it.
PHILOSOPHY
We don't think you have to choose. The best charcoal in Japan comes from a mountain village, and it belongs in a Tokyo restaurant and a London tea ceremony equally. A zero-waste soap can smell extraordinary. A 100-year farmhouse can feel like the most considered place you've ever stayed.
We're not making heritage products for nostalgia. We're making things that earn their place in people's lives because they're genuinely the best version of that thing.
THE PLACE
On the island of Shikoku, inland from the Pacific coast. A river valley, cedar and oak forests, and a shrinking population of a few thousand people. We think it's one of the most beautiful places in Japan.
FOUNDER
Representative, Sumizumi LLC
Ami moved to Niyodogawa from the city and started making charcoal with the local forestry cooperative. She founded Sumizumi LLC to turn the forest's outputs into products people want — and to build a small business that gives back to the place that makes them.
PARTNERS & NETWORK
Everything we make depends on relationships — with the forest cooperative, with the town, and with organisations who share our commitment to rural Japan.
Our charcoal operation is part of the cooperative's managed harvest. Subsidy-certified sustainable forestry.
Disaster response partnership. We support rural evacuation and recovery logistics in Kochi Prefecture.
Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management. Regional network partner for community resilience.
